Inspired by educator H.B. Pemberton's intuitive thought in 1894 to convince Marshall, Texas' superintendent of schools to build it's first black school with a fixed curriculum including sewing, shoe-making, blacksmithing, music, printing, agriculture, and cooking.

Initially starting in an abandoned church, Pemberton's conviction later had the school moved to the Wiley College campus. The school would later be called the Central School and become one of the first accredited schools in the state.

Not subscribing to the baseline educational structure, Pemberton focused on training the child to use the head, hands, and heart to learn and grow creatively.
